‘Central Manufacturing Technology Institute’, CMTI, is a Research & Development organisation focusing on providing ‘Technology Solutions’ to the manufacturing sector and assisting technological growth in the country. CMTI plays a key role in applied research, design and development (RD&D), technology forecasting, assimilation and dissemination of manufacturing technology to Indian industries.

CMTI is a registered Government of India Society, an autonomous institution under the administrative control of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, governed by a Governing Council which has representation from the machine tool manufacturing and user industries, the Union Government and the Government of Karnataka. The Governing Council evolves Policies and monitors policy deployment. A Research Advisory Board (RAB), a Technical Committee with representatives from industries and academia, assists the institute on matters relating to technology advancement.

The Stakeholders of CMTI are

Government of India

Industries at large in all sectors (both private and public) – specifically manufacturing and user industries.

CMTI over the last five decades developed Special Purpose Machines, Inspection Systems, Test Rigs for Qualification testing of products, Tooling, complex machined parts for public and private sectors. CMTI has continuously aligned its facilities and expertise with the fast changing technology in thrust areas of manufacturing to support and serve the manufacturing sector. Nanotechnology, Precision engineering, Metrology (Micro and Nano), Additive Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Vision and Image processing, Digital Design and Human Resource Development( creating ‘Industry Ready’ engineers) are the current areas of focus of the Institute.

CMTI is publishing Manufacturing Technology Today (MTT) a monthly journal since 2002.

Industry 4.0 / Digital Transformation technologies benefit industries by enhancing productivity, quality improvements, ease of maintenance and flexibility in manufacturing operations. One major challenge in digitalisation projects is acquiring data from industrial machinery and equipment due to proprietary industrial protocols. Integrating the “Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)” has spurred digitalisation in manufacturing, enhancing productivity and reliability while lowering labour costs. IIoT links industrial machinery like PLCs, CNCs, and robots via a robust network, generating crucial data for automation. However, due to cost constraints, acquiring data from legacy machines, which use diverse communication protocols, poses a significant challenge, particularly for MSMEs. This paper explores leveraging open-source frameworks for real-time data acquisition from industrial machines in Industry 4.0. Through several test cases, the paper demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of using open-source solutions over vendor-specific licensed software. Additionally, it validates “Wireshark” as a versatile open-source tool for data acquisition across various vendor-specific machines, utilising standard communication protocols. This research offers a pioneering approach to digitalising MSME manufacturing industries while minimising costs efficiently.
Tadigotla Narendra ReddyPrasad PrasannanSeema B. https://mtt.cmti.res.in/index.php/journal/article/view/268

Hydraulic liquid hammer/impact forming is a nontraditional type of sheet metal forming technique in which a dead weight drops freely from a certain height over a plunger working inside a cylinder containing Hydraulic liquid or hydraulic fluid generates shock waves which reach the sheet metal kept at a lower part of the cylinder and deforms it to the shape of the straight edge die placed below the sheet metal. Some of the important process variables that affect the deformation process are the input energy, height of the Hydraulic column, and properties of the work material. The speed of deformation and pressures generated are quite low compared to other unconventional forming processes. In the present work in Taguchi DoE technique is used to find the effect of input parameters on the deformation of superni 718. and also an attempt is made towards green manufacturing by adopting used gear and vegetable oils as working fluids.
E.
